The Lucas MCH61 Headlight

MCH61 Headlight For BSA 1964-1965

Lucas MCH61 Headlight (1964-1965 BSA twins)

Hey C.B.S. readers, I just wanted to share with you a Lucas headlight that I think is pretty awesome. In my opinion it's one of the coolest looking headlights designed and produced by Lucas for only 2 years. Its style and shape make it hard to miss. This headlight I'm referring to is the Lucas MCH61 Headlight.

The Lucas MCH61 headlight came in many different styles but all retrain the deep oval shape. All MCH61 headlights can accept a 7" headlight lens. This specific headlight was fitted to 1964-1965 BSA 500 and 650 models which include the A50 Cyclone, A65 Thunderbolt, A65 Lightning Rocket and the very rare BSA Lightning Clubman.

X2 88SA ignition & lighting switch - center ammeter

The Lucas MCH61 headlight as shown above features x2 88sa switches - lighting and ignition. A center 1 3/4 hole to accept a Lucas ammeter. Mounting holes accept a 5/16" bolt taped to a 26 (CEI) thread pitch. The deep design makes wiring very easy to tuck away. This MCH61 headlight is the same as the Lucas headlights that was fitted to the iconic Lightning Clubman model but was supplied in chrome rather than black. For those building a BSA Lightning Clubman replica you can find a standard MCH61 headlight and have it chromed to make it more "authentic".

Since this specific headlight shell was only used for 2 years it can be very difficult to locate. I see some appear on eBay every now and then but most are damaged and need attention. Price range varies. Ive seen some great condition headlights and buckets go anywhere from $100-$250. At one point there was a source of NOS (new old stock) complete headlights but that sources stock is now depleted. Keep an eye out.

I have this on my Thunderbolt. The bike was partially disassembled when I purchased it. I cannot find an instruction manual for the bike to figure out the functions of the two switches. Any help would be appreciated.
